Anthropic has officially restored global access to Claude Fable 5 starting July 1, 2026, ending a weeks-long suspension triggered by a US government export control directive. The model, built on the same underlying technology as the restricted Mythos 5, is now available on Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.
The saga began on June 12, when the US government slapped Anthropic with an export control directive, effectively cutting off public access to both Mythos 5 and Fable 5. The order came after Amazon researchers reported a method of bypassing Fable 5's safeguards, producing code that demonstrated a software vulnerability exploit.
Over the following two weeks, Anthropic worked closely with the government and partners including Amazon to review the report and strengthen its safeguards. The company trained an improved safety classifier that now blocks the specific bypass technique in over 99% of cases. Users whose requests are blocked will be redirected to Opus 4.8.
Additionally, Anthropic proposed a new industry-wide framework for scoring jailbreak severity, developed together with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other Glasswing partners. This framework aims to establish consistent standards for assessing and addressing model vulnerabilities.
For Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans, Fable 5 will be included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7, after which it will be available via usage credits. AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry access will be restored as quickly as possible.
